A tower inspired by the Marina City of Chicago
The Tour des Horizons is no ordinary building. Designed by architect Georges Maillols and built in the early 1970s, it follows in the tradition of the great modernist cylindrical towers of which the Marina City of Chicago is the world archetype. The same sculptural curves, the same faith in verticality as a life ideal, the same determination to make height not merely a technical argument but an architectural declaration.
Its two white cylinders have dominated Rennes for over 50 years. For several years, they were among the tallest residential towers in Europe - a fact few French cities of this size can claim.
The last great manifesto of Breton modernism
In the aftermath of the war, Rennes dreamed of a new future. Under the impetus of mayor Henri Fréville and architects Louis Arretche and Georges Maillols, the city rebuilt itself with rare ambition: to reinvent the way of living. Open, luminous, vertical.
Within this movement, the Tour des Horizons represents both the pinnacle and the end of a cycle. It is presented in the ARTE documentary "In Rennes, the vertical utopias" as the last great manifesto of that era: "a challenge thrown at the sky and at human scale." After it, the great towers gradually faded. The city became horizontal once more.
Why Love Horizons is the most original and unusual love room in France
It is this combination - and not any single element in isolation - that places Love Horizons in a category of its own among unusual and original romantic addresses in France:
- A unique architectural heritage - occupying the top floors of a tower inspired by the Marina City of Chicago, the work of Georges Maillols, in the city that carried the modernist dream furthest in France;
- An altitude that nothing else matches - the only love room in France installed in an urban tower at this height, with a panoramic view from the suite itself;
- A central and accessible location - not in the countryside, not in a forest. In the heart of Rennes city centre, 15-20 minutes on foot from a TGV station;
- A private spa at height - chromotherapy jacuzzi and private hammam facing the panoramic view, available at any hour, for you alone.
From collective utopia to shared intimacy
Where Maillols sought to build collective housing bathed in light, Love Horizons transforms that light into tangible emotion, that height into a refuge, and that collective utopia into shared intimacy.
Verticality is no longer social or urban - it is sensory. A way of rising together, outside of time, facing the city spread beneath the Breton clouds. At night, the lights of Rennes merge with their reflection in the jacuzzi water. By day, the Breton rooftops and countryside stretch as far as the eye can see. On clear days, some say they can see the sea on the horizon.
